Harvard College reopens in Cambridge.

September 30, 1640

(Fall) Henry Dunster is the first president, but is subsequently forced out of office because of his support for infant baptism. The college is supported by tolls from the Boston-Charlestown ferry and receives 100 pounds from Lady Anne (Radcliffe) Molson for the school’s first scholarship funds in 1642. Four students are in the first class and the first commencement is held in 1642.* The school is chartered in 1650 “for the education of the English and Indian youth of the country in knowledge and godlynes.”
